Commercial District Heating System for Tim Vaughan Racing, Cowbridge, Cardiff
A pair of wood chip boilers form a commercial district heating system, reducing both carbon emissions and running costs for the entire site.
The Site
The biomass boiler serves as a top-class and purpose-built racehorse training facility within the beautiful countryside of South Wales.
The Job
The new near zero-carbon system replaces several gas boilers and immersion heaters and drastically cuts the cost of the constantly used and mucked-out horse bedding. This project was aimed at improving the stable’s local environment as well as decreasing running costs and the carbon footprint of the site as a whole.
A turnkey district heating installation planned and completed by DC2 Engineering Ltd, the project comprises two Froling TM 499(kW) biomass wood chip boilers (complete with automatic auger fuel feel), designed to serve the space heating and hot water heating needs of the office, the onsite accommodation, the drying floor (for drying horse bedding and wood chip), the stables and the workshop, amongst other rooms.
The Review
“DC2 did exactly what they said they would do for the price we agreed and they were very attentive to my needs throughout the process and I cannot recommend them highly enough. A good all-round team.”

The Result
A bespoke heating system, serving almost all on-site needs for heating and hot water, with the capacity to serve future uses with minor alterations, keeping the additional costs to a minimum and reducing the need for a new boiler system in the future.
The fuel store can be loaded from above and automatically feeds into the boiler. The system needs around 1800 tonnes of wood a year to run at near capacity, serving all the buildings on site as requested.
The carbon saving of this is approximately 20 tonnes of CO2 per year, relative to the various fossil fuel heating systems previously on site.
The Aftercare
The system was sold with a 2-year warranty, service contract, and customer training on-site. The system is also fitted with remote access software and a PC for diagnosis and monitoring.
